THE STORY
The largest city of the Midwest, Chicago, Illinois, was founded in 1833 by Jean Du Sable. It quickly grew to become, as Carl Sandburg’s 1916 poem put it, “Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation. Stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders.” Over the last two centuries, it has been home to everything from a great fire to gangsters, from blues music to Bears football, from deep-dish pizza to Playboy. Chicago invented the Ferris Wheel, the zipper, the telephone and even the Twinkie. It is home to such pioneers as Walt Disney, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ernest Hemingway and Da Coach.
